The result is decisions made on noise instead of signal, and weeks spent tweaking button colors while the real problem — wrong headline, wrong audience, wrong value proposition — goes unfixed.

What Counts as a Conversion on a Validation LP

On a product landing page, a conversion is usually a purchase or trial signup. On a validation LP, you’re tracking two distinct conversion events with different meanings:

Email capture rate: The percentage of visitors who submit their email address. This measures interest — the person wants to stay informed. It doesn’t tell you they’ll pay. Baseline: 2–5% for cold organic traffic, 8%+ is a strong demand signal.

Fake-door pricing click rate: The percentage of visitors who click on a pricing tier. This measures purchase intent. Clicking a price requires more commitment than sharing an email. Baseline: 5–15% of email captures also clicking a pricing tier is meaningful. If fewer than 2% of your email captures are clicking pricing, interest exists but urgency is low.

Both numbers together tell a more complete story than either alone.

The Elements That Actually Move the Number

Headline

The headline is the highest-leverage element on your validation LP. Before touching anything else, get this right.

The best-performing headlines for validation sites do one thing: name the problem clearly, in the language the target audience uses. Not “the future of field service management” — that says nothing. “Stop dispatching jobs over text message” says exactly who it’s for and what it fixes.

Two headline patterns that work at the validation stage:

Problem-first: “You’re losing jobs because your dispatch process runs on text messages.” Outcome-first: “Your crew knows where to go. Dispatch runs itself.”

Problem-first tends to outperform at the validation stage because it filters in the right audience and filters out everyone else. A lower overall conversion rate with a tighter fit on who’s converting is more useful than a high conversion rate from a broad, unqualified audience.

Subheadline

One sentence that explains how you deliver the headline’s promise. Concrete, not vague. “CrewRoute connects your dispatcher to every tech in the field, with automatic job assignments and real-time status updates” is better than “the modern dispatch platform for growing teams.”

Above-the-Fold CTA

The primary call to action needs to be visible without scrolling. On most desktop screens, that means it’s in the top 600–700px of the page.

CTA copy matters more than CTA color. “Get early access” outperforms “Submit” and “Sign up.” “See how it works” works for visitors who aren’t ready to commit. The best CTA copy reduces the perceived commitment: “Join the waitlist — free” makes it clear there’s no payment required and no immediate obligation.

Social Proof Block

Here’s the constraint most validation sites face: you have no real customers yet. The wrong move is to fabricate testimonials or invent user counts. The right move is to use proof types that don’t require customers:

  • Technical credibility: “Built on Cloudflare, Astro, and D1 — the same stack that powers production apps at scale”
  • Process transparency: “We built this because we ran dispatch over a group chat and lost three jobs in one week”
  • Scarcity signal: “Early access list is open — no card required”

None of these are fake. All of them reduce friction for the skeptical visitor.

How Fake-Door Pricing Converts Differently

Email capture and fake-door pricing have fundamentally different conversion dynamics. Email capture is low-friction — people share emails for almost any plausible offer. Fake-door pricing clicks require the visitor to engage with price, which introduces psychological commitment.

This means:

  • The conversion funnel has a natural drop-off from LP visitor to email capture to pricing click
  • High email capture + low pricing click rate = interest without urgency (adjust pricing or positioning)
  • Low email capture + high pricing click rate among those who do convert = very high-intent niche audience (possibly too narrow)
  • Both numbers tracking in the 8%+ and 10%+ ranges respectively = test worth continuing

When NOT to Optimize

Don’t touch the page until you have at least 100 unique visitors. At low sample sizes, variance will fool you. A 20% swing in your conversion rate between Monday and Tuesday doesn’t mean your Tuesday version of the page is better — it means you had 12 visitors instead of 10.

Don’t A/B test until you have 200–300 unique visitors per variant. Testing two headlines with 50 visitors each gives you results that are statistically meaningless. You’ll make changes based on noise and slow down your learning loop.

The right optimization sequence:

  1. Weeks 1–2: Get the page live with the best headline and CTA you can write. Don’t touch it.
  2. Week 3–4: Look at your conversion rate with 100+ visitors. If it’s below 1%, something is fundamentally wrong — likely headline or audience mismatch.
  3. Week 5–6: If email capture rate is reasonable but pricing click rate is low, test the pricing tier copy or price points.
  4. After 500 visitors: Make a go/no-go call based on the full picture: conversion rate, pricing clicks, survey responses, and organic traffic growth.

Reading the Data You Have

Optimization is only useful if you know what you’re optimizing for. The numbers to track, and what they mean:
